Colombia...
a new path
Colombia is the only country in South America with
coastlines on both the North Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The Climate of
Colombia is characterized for being tropical and isothermal as a result of its
geographical location near the Equator presenting variations within five natural
regions and depending on the altitude, temperature, humidity, winds and
rainfall.
Colombia is
an ideal place to visit the remote past before the Spanish Conquerors
arrived. The cultural history of the country is largely the result of its
great pre-Hispanic past. Over twelve cultures inhabited list territory that
left vestiges of a surprising level of development. Towns and stone paths,
enigmatic statues, burial urns and impressive gold and potter objects teach
the visitor an inheritance of beliefs and ways of life.
In the
southern foothills of the country the culture of San Agustin, developed
several millennia before the discovery of America, left monumental statues
and burial temples scalped in volcanic rock as vestiges of their rites.
Tierradentro,
also situated in a large 500 square kilometer archeological area, large
underground tombs are preserved and funeral urns are lodged. These tombs
symbolize the magical-religious systems that governed the lives of the Paez
Indians.
The Tayrona
culture is one of the most advanced of pre-Hispanic times which developed in
the foothills of the Santa Marta Sierra Nevada. Cobbled paths, bridges,
canals, tiled terraces, and ceramics reflect the high level of development
achieved by the vanished culture. The Lost City is a large pre-Hispanic city
that can only be reached by foot and requires a special visitors permit
issued by the INDERENA and ICAN, government agencies dedicated to the
preservation of this unique archeological site.
